Managing urban zones in Mecca with WingtraOne
Makkah al-Mukarramah, otherwise known as the Mecca, is the holiest city in Islam and the third most populated city in Saudi Arabia. Every year, millions of Muslims travel there as part of the holy Hajj pilgrimage.
What people might not realize is that some of these pilgrims stay and set up makeshift housing. The Kingdom is now looking into ways to better manage the situation, ensuring that ownership is assigned and lands are maintained.
Over the last 40 years, settlers have stayed in big numbers, occupying the lands and building without permits. The government is working now to find a solution.
Nasr Khashoggi
General Manager at Geographic Technology Trading EST
“Saudi’s Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs started a new cadastral platform where each citizen who has a piece of land can register for ownership. Collecting info on who is in these areas is a first step.”
Khashoggi said that mapping with WingtraOne is perfect for this application because it is so accurate, fast and affordable. His team has demoed three areas for the municipality to review, each around 1 km2 (0.4 mi2).
“It went excellent,” he said. “The results of the orthophotos were astonishing. The municipality was surprised. We achieved 1.3 cm accuracy from about 100 m (330 ft) with Wingtra’s RX1R II.”
