FAQ
Do I need Wingtra PRO software to fly WingtraRAY?
No. WingtraRAY works with any Wingtra software plan: Essential (included with WingtraRAY, no additional subscription), PRO, or UNLIMITED.
Is WingtraRAY mapping drone compatible with the Wingtra workflow?
Yes. WingtraRAY works seamlessly with the full Wingtra workflow:
- WingtraGROUND for flight checkpoint setup and GNSS logging
- Wingtra software offers RGB photogrammetry processing in one easy-to-use workflow
Prefer to use your own tools? No problem. WingtraRAY is base-station and software agnostic—you can:
- Use your own GNSS base station
- Process your data in third-party software like Pix4D, Agisoft, or Trimble
That said, for the smoothest experience, WingtraGROUND and Wingtra software are built to work as one connected system—no file conversions, no app switching.
I already use WingtraOne GEN II. Can I upgrade to WingtraRAY?
Yes. If you already use WingtraOne GEN II, you can:
- Easily move your MAP61, RX1R II, LIDAR, or RedEdge-P sensor from WingtraOne GEN II to WingtraRAY with an affordable upgrade mount.
Are WingtraOne GEN II sensors compatible with WingtraRAY?
Yes—with an upgrade mount, you can reuse most GEN II sensors, including:
- MAP61
- Wingtra LIDAR
- RedEdge-P
- RX1R II
Contact us for upgrade details.
What is adaptive speed?
WingtraRAY adjusts its speed automatically (between 16–22 m/s) to maximize coverage while keeping your data clean—no motion blur, no missed images. You get the fastest flight possible, without sacrificing accuracy.
How should teams compare mapping drones?
Compare mapping drones by the full job, not only by flight specs. Check flight planning, ground setup, takeoff and landing needs, sensor quality, ground sample distance, accuracy workflow, coverage at the required resolution, processing options, support, compliance and total time from mission planning to usable deliverables.
A drone with longer flight time can still cost more time if it needs fragile setup, repeated flights, manual file handling, heavy troubleshooting or re-flights after capture.
Can I use my own base station?
Yes. You can use your own GNSS base to log corrections. Just note:
- WingtraGROUND base offers automatic upload to Wingtra software
- With your own base, you’ll need to manually upload GNSS logs
- Wingtra software features Trimble-native file support.
Can I use my own post-processing software?
Yes. WingtraRAY outputs are compatible with major third-party tools like:
- Pix4D
- Agisoft
- Trimble Business Center
- and more
Wingtra software also supports full processing if you want to keep it all in one system.
When is WingtraRAY the right drone for mapping and surveying?
WingtraRAY is a strong fit when field time, accuracy and repeatability matter. It works best for surveyors, engineers and GIS teams mapping construction sites, mines, roads, corridors, cadaster projects, environmental areas and infrastructure.
It is especially useful when a project needs high-resolution RGB data, LIDAR point clouds, multispectral outputs, or frequent repeat flights from the same workflow. For very small visual-only jobs, a compact multirotor may be enough.
What does a typical workflow look like?
Plan in Wingtra software, log ground control data with WingtraGROUND, fly with WingtraRAY, and process data in Wingtra software and export to your preferred tool.
Want a visual walk-through? Watch a full demo here
What mapping outputs do I get?
Once WingtraRAY data is processed in Wingtra software, you can export:
- Orthomosaic (.GeoTIFF)
- Point cloud (.LAS or .CSV)
- Digital surface model (DSM) (.GeoTIFF)
Is WingtraRAY approved by the FAA for operations over people (OOP)?
WingtraRAY is on track for FAA approval to fly over people and moving vehicles without a waiver. While formal approval is still pending, the FAA has accepted our proposed Means of Compliance, and WingtraRAY has passed all required tests.
Can WingtraRAY be used for 3D drone mapping?
Yes. WingtraRAY supports 3D drone mapping with RGB imagery, oblique imagery and Wingtra LIDAR. RGB and oblique data help create detailed visual 3D models, while LIDAR captures dense point clouds and terrain detail where vegetation or surface complexity matters.
Which sensors does WingtraRAY use for drone mapping?
WingtraRAY supports MAP61 for the fastest RGB mapping, SURVEY61 for high-accuracy survey workflows with reduced GCP density, Wingtra LIDAR for point clouds and terrain mapping, INSPECT for high-detail inspection, and multispectral payloads for vegetation and environmental analysis.
Does WingtraRAY work with drone mapping software?
Yes. WingtraRAY data can be processed in Wingtra software or exported to common third-party photogrammetry, LIDAR and mapping software depending on their deliverable requirements.
